Sikkim stand-off not the longest since 1962: Army

The stand-off between the armies of the two countries is located on a plateau next to Sikkim, which borders China.

On Friday, Jaitley said that Beijing has instigated the military stand-off by building a road along the Himalayan border that is a security concern for India. Beijing has asked India to remove its troops.

"Although Modi didnt mention the existing problems in Indias ties with the US, Trump reminded him of protectionism in trade and investment in India that jeopardises US interests", it also said.

At the centre of the confrontation is a road built by China in Doklam, which China refers to as Donglang.

The article also blamed the Indian government of starting an anti-dumping probe into Chinese products.

India's reaction follows a face-off between Indian and Chinese troops in the area, prompting Beijing to take a tough stance and demand withdrawal of Indian troops from the Sikkim sector as a precondition for "meaningful dialogue" to resolve the situation.

On July 2, the Indian Army rushed additional troops to the area to engage the Chinese People's Liberation Army in a "non-combative mode". "(It is) important that consensus on border issue between India and China through Special Representatives process is scrupulously respected".

India is now raising an 80,000-strong mountain strike corps and carrying out a massive infrastructure building plan along its almost 3,500-kilometer border with China. But unlike in 1962, the Chinese side suffered far heavier casualties in the 1967 clashes, concentrated at Nathu La and Cho La. It rapidly escalated after Delhi and Thimphu opposed road construction by Beijing along the border that belongs to Bhutan, but claimed by Beijing. Bhutan co-operates closely with India in determining its foreign policy, and the Indian Army is involved in the training of its armed forces. If it is completed, it will be a strategic win for China as they will then be closer to the Indian army's position in a particularly vulnerable area called the Siliguri corridor.

Relations between India and China have deteriorated sharply over the past three years. In return, the United States has proclaimed India a Major Defense Partner giving its access to the advanced weapons Washington provides only to its most-trusted allies. Thus possibly China didn't foresee India coming to Bhutan's aid.

The row between the Asian neighbors could impact talks between Modi and the Chinese president should they cross paths at the summit this week. In a joint statement, India gave full-throated support to Washington's provocative stances on the South China Sea dispute and North Korea, and the usa signed on to unprecedentedly harsh language in demanding Pakistan prevent "terrorists" from using its territory.

"Though proposed by China, the Belt and Road is not a 'Chinese project.' It is a multilateral initiative, with win-win results at its core", it said. India needs to observe the Treaty and pull back troops immediately from Doklam, he added.

The Indian ruling elite has been tilting toward Washington since the beginning of the 21st century. The decision was conveyed to the batch of journalists by the Chinese embassy in New Delhi.
