Several bodies found inside tractor-trailer in San Antonio

Police said Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been notified.

A 2012 report from the International Labour Organization found that 20.9 million people worldwide are the victims of human trafficking.

The victims' country of origin, destination, or ages remain unknown, though official interviews with survivors seem to indicate there may have been as many as 100 people in the truck at one point. Thirty-eight were found inside. The unaccounted for are believed to have fled. Temperatures inside a vehicle can increase by 20 degrees more than the outside temperature in as little as 10 minutes, after an hour that temperature can be 43 degrees higher. Many were suffering from heat stroke and dehydration. Others had lesser injuries.

William McManus, San Antonio Police Chief said they discovered the bodies after a phone call late Saturday.

Police apprehended the driver of the truck at the scene. The U.S. Homeland Security Department is taking the lead in the investigation. All were victims of ruthless human smugglers indifferent to the well-being of their fragile cargo. The arrested driver faces state and federal charges, police said.

Barr also declined to identify the employee who asked police to conduct a welfare check on the truck.

Police officers gather around the tractor-trailer and tow truck outside of Walmart. Neither it nor the truck's cab appear to have markings. "Our response should serve as a lesson to the world that San Antonio will not turn its back on any man, woman or child in need". He said that if any resident in the area encounters someone from the truck, they should "call 911 right away".
