Netflix made the announcement on the social networking site Twitter. His role in the series is based on Vikram Chandra's critically-acclaimed and best-selling novel by the same name. He also admitted that he's proud to bag the first original series from India that will be showcased on Netflix. "His role is layered and complex, and we are thrilled to be working with such a fantastic actor to bring this story to a global audience", Erik Barmack, vice president of worldwide original series at Netflix, said in a press statement.

While the streaming giant has produced a number of hit worldwide shows (it got 91 Emmy nominations this year), Sacred Games, an adaptation of Vikram Chandra's 20006 crime novel of the same name, will be their first original series in India. It will be available to the streaming giant's 100 million members in over 190 countries.

The story weaves itself around Mumbai's intricate web of organised crime, corruption, politics and espionage. It interweaves the lives of the privileged, the famous, the wretched and the bloodthirsty.

In December, Netflix signed a long-term content deal with leading actor Shah Rukh Khan's production company Red Chillies Entertainment, for a three year period. Stay tuned for more updates about the film. It took over two years before the script was presented to the actor and to add to their surprise, Saif gave a nod in just 5 minutes after reading it!
