Lakers and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope both looking for more in 2018

Paul George has said that the idea of him storming after the Lakers in 2018 free agency is overblown.

The Los Angeles Lakers made their first foray into this year's free agency by signing SG Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Tuesday night.

Before anything else goes down, here's three reasons that signing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was the right move for the Lakers. Simmons, who started for the injured Kawhi put up 18 points on an efficient 8-12 shooting from the field and looked very comfortable given the circumstances.

Both players are interesting options for the Lakers, and as Windhorst points out, Rondo could fill Magic Johnson's desire to add a point guard on a one-year deal. He's streaky overall and his 39.9 field-goal percentage is something that needs to increase, but he's better creating off the dribble now and making plays moving with the ball (a career-high 2.5 assists per game last season, too). A team of Ball, Caldwell-Pope, LeBron/George, Randle and Lopez.

KCP averaged 13.8 points in 76 games last season for the Pistons.

What Would Rondo Bring to the Lakers? A one-year deal would be flawless for the Lakers, but he'd also be a great backup option for a longer-term deal if the team can't add a big name free agent or two next summer. By many projections, he was in line possibly to get a maximum offer of four years and $106 million from another team, which the Pistons would have been able to match.

Los Angeles is also reportedly still hoping to sign former All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo to a one-year deal by using their $4.3 million room exception that is provided to teams with salary-cap space as an additional spending asset.

National Basketball Association players will nearly always gamble on themselves given the opportunity, and given KCP's youth (just 24), the role he so ably fills as a 3-and-D player and the potential he has to take another big leap forward, it's hard to fault his reasoning.
