Jordan charges Israeli guard with murder over embassy shooting

On Friday, thousands of Jordanians protested in Amman against Israel over the installation of metal detectors outside a site sacred to both Muslims and Jews in East Jerusalem.

The new security measures have triggered the bloodiest spate of Israeli-Palestinian violence for years.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry had no immediate comment.

The staff of Israel's embassy in Amman, returned from Jordan on Monday night, hours after a telephone call between King Abdullah and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. During the incident, the Jordanian worker was killed, but the landlord was injured as well.

An Israeli judicial source who declined to be named said state prosecutors were giving "preliminary consideration" to an investigation.

Jordan is not allowing the guard to leave the country, and Israel has confined its staff at the embassy to the embassy grounds.

It is also one of only two Arab governments that have signed a peace treaty with Israel and established full diplomatic relations.

Following the call, Netanyahu held a consultation with his security cabinet to discuss a possible "technological solution" that would replace the metal detectors.

More than 300 Palestinians have lost their lives at the hands of Israeli forces in the ongoing tensions since the beginning of October 2015.
