Jewish Actor Martin Landau, 89, Passes Away

TMZ reported he appeared in nearly 200 films and television shows and "worked until his death".

"We are overcome with sadness to report the death of iconic actor Martin Landau", read the statement from his reps, according to PEOPLE. During the mid-1970s and 80s, Landau's Hollywood shine had dimmed considerably.

Landau received an Emmy nomination for each of his three seasons on M:I, taking home the Golden Globe for Best TV Star - Male in 1968. He has been credited with helping to guide the talents of Huston, Warren Oates and Harry Dean Stanton in addition to Nicholson.

Hand's character, billed as "The World's Greatest Impersonator", also pinned Landau as a master of disguise in the eyes of casting directors, who saw him suited to play a variety of roles, notes the The New York Times.

His first major role on the silver screen was two years later as Leonard, the antagonist's henchman in Alfred Hitchcock's masterwork North by Northwest. At the 1995 Academy Awards, he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of actor Bela Lugosi in "Ed Wood".

Landau - who was hired at age 17 as a cartoonist at the New York Daily News, a resume tidbit that never ceases to delight me - had an acting career that stretched over six decades, moving back and forth between film and television as the opportunities allowed.

Martin Landau's influence in the film industry is vast, inspiring countless actors and directors.

"Stranger Things" star David Harbour tweeted "The great Martin Landau has died. Trust has to be attained", Landau said.

Suddenly, Landau was getting meaty, interesting film roles again - the most celebrated of which came in 1994, with his performance as Bela Lugosi in Tim Burton's Ed Wood, garnering predictions of a Supporting Actor Oscar win before the film even came out.

Landau and Bain were married from 1957 to 1993. He would later star in Space: 1999, and earned further Emmy nominations for guest roles in Without a Trace and Entourage. The mark of a truly talented performer is their ability to make a small role memorable, and that's exactly what Landau did here. "Despite the trash, he had a certain dignity about him, whatever the role".

He is survived by his daughters Susie (a writer-producer) and Juliet (an actress known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer) from his marriage to Barbara Bain.
