High Ranking Israeli Security Official Stabbed at Israeli Embassy in Jordan

The Israeli embassy in the affluent Rabae district of Amman is protected by Jordanian gendarmes.

The Israeli authorities have suggested that the guard acted in self defense, after a teenage worker attacked him with a screwdriver.

The second Jordanian, who died from his wounds in hospital, was identified as the building's landlord.

Overnight Sunday, the Foreign Ministry called on the staff in Amman to come home, but Jordanian officials refused to authorize the exit of the security guard - and most of the diplomatic staff made a decision to stay on in solidarity.

Jordan said he can only leave the country after an investigation.

The escalation began earlier this month when Arab gunmen fired from the holy site, killing two Israeli policemen. Israel's move triggered Muslim protests and claims that it's trying to expand its role at the site, which is also holy to Jews.

President Abbas has suspended all contacts between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government on Friday in protest of the metal detectors.

Online, many Jordanians speculated that the blame lay with the Israeli official involved, and accused the Israeli media of distorting the truth.

The incident comes against a background of tension over the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. However, the ministry said it was working with the local officials.

The security guard was lightly wounded, the foreign ministry statement said.

The father of the teen assailant reportedly told a Jordanian television station that he does not believe his son meant to attack an Israeli.

The tourists were in Jordan to visit the Tomb of Aaron، the biblical high priest and brother of Moses، who tradition holds is buried on Mount Hor، near Petra، at a site known locally as Jabal Haroun.

The UN Security Council will hold closed-door talks today about the spiralling violence after Egypt, France and Sweden sought a meeting to "urgently discuss how calls for de-escalation in Jerusalem can be supported". It says they are meant to prevent more attacks. On Monday, there were growing signs Israel was testing alternative security arrangement.

Around half of Jordan's seven million citizens are of Palestinian origin.
