Government 'not aware' of plans for Donald Trump to visit UK

Some UK media reports had suggested that the US President may utilise a gap between his visit to Hamburg in Germany, for the G-20 summit later this week and a planned visit to France for Bastille Day celebrations on July 14 to drop in the UK. From there he could travel to London to meet U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May for informal talks. But there have been reports that Trump may try to sneak in another destination - a secret visit to the United Kingdom that would allow him to slip in without facing the hordes of protesters who planned to greet him.

It's unclear whether he will return to the US before travelling to France the following Friday, but the Guardian reports that Whitehall sources believe Trump could visit one of his golf courses in Scotland during the interim.

However the government has now been warned that Trump is set to visit in the next couple of weeks with only 24 hours' notice.

News of the potential visit put protesters on "standby" with several prominent lefties urging people to march against the Republican leader.

It follows calls to abandon a planned state visit after the Mr Trump's decision earlier this year to ban people from flying to the U.S. from a number of mainly Muslim countries.

But Owen Jones, co-founder of Stop Trump Coalition, said: "Donald Trump is so cowardly he thinks he can sneak into the country to avoid protests".

Reports suggested the USA leader wants it delayed until it can take place without protests, and a visit to one of his golf courses would limit the chance for demonstrations.

Facing the prospect of mass demonstrations he later told Mrs May that he did not want to go ahead with the visit unless it was supported by the British public.

The US President was said to be looking forward to been driven in the Queen's gold-plated carriage down the Mall to Buckingham Palace during his state visit.

Both the White House and 10 Downing Street were quick to quell the reports.
