But when she and other family members swam out to save them, they also became trapped by the rip current.

According to the Panama City News Herald, Ursrey along with her husband, mother, nephews and sons were swimming near the M.B. Miller County Pier on Panama City Beach on July 8.

As Ms Simmons swam out to the distressed swimmers, other people on the beach linked together in a human chain to reach them. The newspaper reports that people began forming a human chain, eventually reaching about 100 yards into the ocean.

Ursey said her mother suffered a massive heart attack during the ordeal, but is recovering in the hospital.

Rosalind Beckton, 38, was at the beach with her 12-year-old son and caught the rescue effort on camera. "That's the only thing I was thinking of, if we're arm to arm, we can get them". The waves were throwing the grandmother's body around and it took a lot of strength from the grandmother's son-in-law, Derek Simmons and another person to keep her head above the water during the rescue.

"They were trying their best to swim and everything but once you've been out there in a rip current for that long, it's like running a race all day long, it's just tiring", he said.

That was when another beachgoer, Jessica Simmons, spotted the family stranded in the water and realized they were drowning.

She and her husband started with the children, passing Noah and Stephen back along the human chain, which passed them all the way to the beach.

Everyone else in her family had only minor injuries and is doing OK. "Without them, we wouldn't be here".

"I honestly thought I was going to lose my family that day", Ursrey said, according to the News Herald.

"I am so grateful", Ursrey told CBS. "I knew I could get out there and get to them". They heard screaming and saw people pointing at two boys who got caught in a riptide.

"We need more of that", Jessica Simmons said.

"It's so cool to see how we have our own lives and we're constantly at a fast pace, but when somebody needs help, everybody drops everything and helps", Simmons told the Panama City News Herald. Without them, we wouldn't be here'.
