Trump says Scalise shooter is dead

The suspect was taken to custody at the time, but later died, President Donald Trump said Wednesday.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) on Wednesday identified the two Capitol police officers injured while responding to the shooting and said he expressed "profound gratitude" to Bailey and Griner.

The CNN cited Flake as saying once the shooter was neutralized, he and U.S. Rep. Brad Wenstrup went out to where Scalise was lying to apply pressure to his wound and that Scalise was coherent the whole time. Their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Texas Rep. Roger Williams said a member of his staff was also shot at the baseball practice. He was reportedly shot in the hip and is expected to recover. Early reports suggest the shooter might have been a Bernie Sanders supporter.

Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI) told Wisconsin's WTMJ that he believed the shooting "could have been much worse" if Scalise had not been there, due to the security detail that protects him. "He is in stable condition", the statement said.

President Trump called Wednesday for Americans to come together in the aftermath of a "terrible" shooting outside Washington, D.C., that wounded a Republican member of Congress and four others.

The shooting happened as Republican members of Congress were getting ready for the annual Congressional Baseball Game, which was scheduled for Thursday in Washington.

Trump says Comey not telling truth, willing to respond under oath
They sent a separate request to Trump's White House counsel, Don McGahn, for any record the White House had of their meetings. WILLIAM BRANGHAM: On the other side of the aisle, Democrats pounced on Comey's claims about the president.

Rep. Tom Rooney, R-FL was at the practice but left minutes before the shooting to take his kids to school. "I hear Steve Scalise over near second base scream".

"I was looking right at him", Bishop told Detroit radio station WWJ. "He was a sitting duck".

Lawmaker Brooks described Scalise dragging his body across the pitch to get away from the shooter while the firing continued. It's unclear which victim is the one MedStar says is in "good condition".

U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake said the gunman had "a rifle of some sort (and) a lot of ammo".

A law enforcement official said the shooting is being investigated as a criminal act rather than an act of terrorism.

"It was scary", Barton said. She said the officer had gotten out of a parked vehicle, drawn a handgun and shouted something to the gunman, who then fired.

"I just didn't want her to wake up and learn the news", Flake said. As we continue to gather information, Tracy and I would like to send our prayers to my friend and colleague, Steve Scalise, as well as members of the security detail and congressional staff who were injured.
