'Transformers' tops box office but is biggest in China

Megan Colligan, Paramount's president of marketing and distribution, says The Last Knight was always meant to be a global play: "You aren't making the movie with just the mind".

Transformers: The Last Knight's winning debut, in which it booked an estimated $69.1 million in domestic ticket sales, would seem to be a triumph. Paramount data showed that the audience was 57% male and 51% over 25. Not to mention Hasbro is still going to earn lots of money with all of the new toys that it has released to go alongside the film.

Final figures are expected Monday.

The latest fifth installment of the series has received the lowest opening of the franchise. Colligan also remarked on the film's lack of national support, adding, "We certainly would have liked to see more come out of the domestic market". Its total global haul is sitting pretty at $196.2 million, with openings forthcoming in Brazil, France, Mexico, Japan and more. That is by far the lowest five-day start for this lucrative franchise in the United States, indicating that at least in North America, audiences have started to tire of the Autobots and Decepticons.

That figure has held with the release of the new movie, which has already earned an estimated $196.2 million overseas. And these numbers were achieved without five major markets which will still open in the coming weeks - France, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and Spain. This weekend, the latest "Transformers" movie opened far behind its predecessors. Behind it, tied for No. 2, were the previous weekend's victor, Cars 3, and the durable superhero hit Wonder Woman.

Later this week, Diana will race past Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman to become the top-grossing film from the DC Extended Universe entering the all-time Top 50 in the process. "However, given the percentage of revenue that is actually gleaned by studios from markets like China, getting to the requisite profit margin can still prove challenging and make the justification for future installments hard".

Falling to second is last week's champ, Cars 3, which brought in $25.1 million. The third Cars film was off 53%, much better than Cars 2's 60% drop though not as impressive as the 43% second-weekend slip for the first film. Now that's what I intend to find out next weekend and then sit down to write 5 Ups and 5 Downs of the movie thereafter.

47 Meters Down retained the fourth spot ($7.4 million this weekend), while All Eyez On Me and The Mummy were neck and neck for fifth place, with both films falling just short of $6 million. Lionsgate has banked $38.6M.

The Tom Cruise-led action blockbuster "The Mummy" was pushed two notches down to the third. This brings the movie's domestic haul to $68.5 million. Its worldwide release has yet to kick off. Worldwide to date is $342.1M.

Scarlett Johansson's Rough Night was down 41% in its second weekend with $4.7 million.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2", $3 million. The ensemble film is now sitting at $16.6 million domestically and $24.2 million worldwide. Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled charted with $240,545 on four screens.
