Oilers deal Jordan Eberle to Islanders for Ryan Strome

Returning to the postseason previous year for the first time since their Stanley Cup Final loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, the Oilers' are now looking to catapult their franchise back into the limelight by regaining their championship form.

Eberle has two years remaining on a six-year, $36 million contract at $6 million per season.

On the surface, the deal feels lopsided in favor of the Islanders who have been looking to help Tavares for quite some time. If the two mesh well in 2017-18 then Eberle could see a significant spike in production, possibly to the point where he returns to the 60-70 point range. The fifth-overall draft pick from 2011 hasn't yet panned out to be what many thought he could, but he's still very young and has the potential to break out with a change of scenery in Edmonton.

Eberle has 165 goals and 217 assists over 507 career National Hockey League games, all with Edmonton.

In New York, he is expected to join the top line alongside Tavares, the Islanders' captain, and one of the best players in the game.

Berube, 25, played in 14 games with NY last season, going 3-2-2 with a 3.42 goals-against average and a.889 save percentage. While the Islanders' superstar center still managed a healthy 28 goals and 66 points, it was his lowest point total in any season where he had played at least 70 games. Eberle has shown prowess with the extra man over his career, and in the past four seasons alone has potted 24 goals and 66 points on the power play.

Going the other way was 23-year-old Ryan Strome, a winger who entered the league with great promise and potential but has never been able to fulfill it in NY.

"He brings speed and a knack for scoring not only consistently, but scoring big goals, in big games", Snow said of Eberle, who made back-to-back trips to the All-Star Game in 2011 and 2012. His creativity with the puck could make him a major asset for the Islanders' power play.

Ryan Strome will look to get his career back on track in Edmonton. The Oilers need to conserve cap space to offer big contracts to Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
