McAuliffe votes in Virginia's primary election

There are 31 races across the state, including governor and lieutenant governor.

Campaigning for statewide office, most Democratic candidates have typically ignored the deep red Appalachian corner of the state where Trump won numerous counties by 70% margins.

Drawing a further contrast with Northam, Perriello has campaigned heavily against the Mountain Lake Natural Gas pipeline.

Stewart, despite the fact that his run is in many ways a clone of the Trump campaign, also does not enjoy the support of the President.

On Tuesday, there will be 27 primary races, though candidates in two districts have dropped out since the ballots were printed.

Rowe says that he was also impressed by Perriello's organizing style and his ability to bring people together who disagree.

The Democratic primary contest has been a hard fought battle between Northam, the state party establishment's favorite, and insurgent candidate Tom Perriello.

Tomorrow's Democratic gubernatorial primary in Virginia has gotten a lot more national attention than the New Jersey contests last week.

All registered voters are eligible to vote, but the registration deadline for Tuesday's election has passed. Trump's approval among Virginians was at just 36 percent in an April Quinnipiac University Poll, and last November he lost the state by six points. The general election is expected to be an early referendum on the president and a preview of what the 2018 midterm elections will look like. Stewart, the head of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, was a former Virginia co-chair for Trump. Meanwhile, on the Republican side, former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie is favored.

On the Republican side, frontrunner Ed Gillespie, a moderate Washington insider, is trying to fend off under-funded but spirited campaigns from avid Trump supporter Corey Stewart and state Sen.

Stewart is an ardent supporter of Trump and was a former state campaign chairman for the president's campaign previous year. And he's explicitly appealing to Trump supporters. And he believed months of meeting voters around the state would pay dividends Tuesday, even though Northam has financial and endorsement advantages. Ultimately, he hasn't fully embraced or rebuked the president. "I know you've been waiting for your first income tax cut for you know 45 years, but you are going to have to wait, ' so that's not a very impressive plan for me".
