"They do have heat maps so you can see where the hot spots are", Francis said.

Snapchat made headlines earlier this week with the introduction of "Snap Map," a new feature that allows users to see their friends' location on a map.

The new feature is available for all accounts, unless you manually disable it in the applications settings menu.

But a Snapchat spokesperson told The Sun Online: "The safety of our community is very important to us and we want to make sure that all Snapchatters, parents and educators have accurate information about how the Snap Map works". She said despite how technology companies aim to help parents, they have to do the groundwork themselves.

But internet safety experts fear it could lead to stalking or bullying.

Once it is accessed for the first time, Snap Map can be turned on or put into "Ghost Mode", which doesn't share the user's location with anyone.

She said it all comes down to checking in and monitoring what your kids are doing. The feature gives users an option who they want to share their location with, if at all, and change the setting to a private mode called "Ghost Mode" at any time. While the feature allows users to find their friends, the Rosenberg Police Department warned there may be children who have friends on Snapchat that they have never met before.

"But I think overall, if you're aware of what's going on with your child you're going to know who they're snapchatting", Schneider-Loberg said.

"It's also not possible to share your location with someone who isn't already your friend on Snapchat, and the majority of interactions on Snapchat take place between close friends".
