China a step closer to resuming US beef imports

Iowa beef producers are a step closer to the largest market in the world.

The agreement means a US plant may ship qualified beef products to China as soon as the plant is approved to do so by the USDA, said the North American Meat Institute, a trade group representing meatpackers.

"Today is a great day for the United States and in particular for our cattle producers, who will be regaining access to an enormous market with an ever-expanding middle class", says Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue.

"About 10 percent of USA cattle may meet traceability requirements", Derrell Peel, an agricultural economist at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, said in a telephone interview.

It's been a long time coming, but US beef will eventually be on its way to mainland China.

China banned USA beef in 2003 after a US scare over mad cow disease. "I am pleased to work with the Trump Administration to ensure that Montana beef is back on the menu in China". I commend the hard work of Secretary Ross, Secretary Mnuchin, Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, and our USDA representatives.

DeGrom, Cabrera lead Mets over Cubs 6-1 for 4th straight win
Cespedes hit a grand slam in his return Saturday from a left hamstring injury that landed him on the disabled list for six weeks. Asdrubal Cabrera made up for an early error with two home runs, taking both of them off Cubs' right-hander John Lackey (4-7).

China stopped importing USA beef in 2003 due to concerns about Mad Cow disease.

"President Trump is doing more to improve the U.S. We will continue to work toward a more fair and balanced economic relationship with China by expanding opportunities for USA workers and businesses". Before the ban, the United States was China's largest supplier of imported beef. I encourage China and all countries to base their requirements on worldwide standards and science.

American beef may soon be back on the menu in China.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in May that US and Chinese officials were working on a framework to finally restart beef exports after Beijing had failed to fulfill repeated promises during the Obama administration to open up their market again.

"Today's announced agreement that us beef producers will have access to China's market, the world's largest, is a major achievement".

The full export verification requirements are posted on the USDA's website and outline what it will take for packers to apply for export approval into China. The United States is the world's largest beef producer and was the world's fourth-largest exporter, with global sales of more than $5.4 billion in 2016.
