UFC creates 4th weight class for women, adding 125-pounders

It becomes the fourth women's division inside the Octagon, joining fighters at featherweight, bantamweight and strawweight. Also, females now on the UFC roster that can successfully make 125-pounds throughout the duration of the season are open to tryout.

The UFC now has women's divisions at featherweight (145 pounds), bantamweight (135 pounds), and strawweight (115 pounds).

Despite the press release distributed by promotion on Thursday night, UFC President Dana White told Yahoo Sports that nothing was official at this time and that any news regarding a new 125-pound division was premature. The 135-pound bantamweight class was the first women's division in the UFC, debuting in 2013 with champion Ronda Rousey.

It appears that will be rectified on the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter", the UFC's reality series which has developed so much talent for the company in its 12 years of existence. The tryouts are also open to current UFC competitors that can make 125 pounds throughout the season.

Numerous fighters already under UFC contract, including strawweight Paige VanZant, have requested the extra weight class in recent years, hoping to compete closer to their natural weight instead of fighting at 135 or 115 pounds.

Although this will be the official start of the women's flyweight division, Joanne Calderwood defeated Valerie Letourneau in a 125-pound matchup previous year. The inaugural title fight for that weight class took place between Germaine de Randamie and Holly Holm at UFC 208 in February.
