Texas Cop Who Shot and Killed Jordan Edwards Fired

Days after it was determined that Balch Springs officer Roy Oliver shot into a vehicle as it was moving away from him and killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards, Oliver has been fired but not arrested for murder.

Edwards and his 16-year-old brother were heading home from a house party in the Dallas suburb when the officer - responding to noise complaints - shot the fatal head-wound shot through the window of the vehicle.

Officer Roy Oliver has been with the Balch Springs Police Department in Texas since 2011.

"After reviewing the findings I have made the decision to terminate Roy Oliver's employment with the Balch Springs Police Department", chief Jonathan Haber told reporters. But during the departmental investigation Chief Haber said video contradicted that information and that the auto was driving away from Officer Oliver when he fired his weapon.

Initially, it was reported that an officer fired on the auto Jordan Edwards was riding in because it was reversing in an "aggressive manner" toward a police vehicle. "I made a mistake and I apologized for it", Haber said on Tuesday.

The family later said that while they are grateful that Oliver has been fired, "there remains a long road ahead".

The incident is being investigated by the Dallas County Sherrif's Office and charges against Oliver may or may not be forthcoming.

Edwards' family has called for Oliver to be charged with murder for the shooting, which was witnessed by two of the teen's brothers. Authorities are investigating what led Oliver, who was sacked, to shoot Edwards as he was sitting in the passenger seat of a moving vehicle.

Balch Springs police officers have been instructed not to discuss the ongoing criminal investigation into the shooting death of Jordan Edwards.

Haber has not planned to release the body-cam footage of Edwards' final moments, and has also kept the identity of the officer involved, who was placed on administrative duty, hidden for now.

He acknowledged then that the vehicle was moving away from officers when Oliver fired the shots and said the officer's actions were not consistent with the department's "core values". "The officers who extended this nightmare for those children ought to be properly reprimanded".

Funeral services for Edwards are planned for Saturday (May 6).

The brother who was driving pulled over and tried to motion to police for help, she said.

"Our family is working hard to deal with both the loss of our beloved Jordan and the lingering trauma it has caused our boys", the family statement said.

"After you've seen the scenario play out over and over, you're always building up this hope, and it seems like you're cut off right before you get to the promised land", Crockett said. The TLBC will continue to work in Austin and around the state to build healthy relationships between African American and local police departments. The bullet from the officer's rifle struck Edwards in the head, killing the unarmed 15-year-old teen from Mesquite, a suburb of Dallas.
