Scottish Conservatives launch Angus general election campaign

"It is pretty clear that Theresa May, on the strength of support in England, is going to win the General Election, so for people in Scotland, if they want strong voices standing up for Scotland's interests and holding the Tories to account in Westminster, that can only come from the SNP".

The Tories have analysed first preference votes given in the council wards of Lower Deeside, Torry and Ferryhill, Kincorth, Loirston and Cove, Hazlehead, Queens Cross and Countesswells and Airyhall, Broomhill and Garthdee.

However, there appears to be little appetite for the idea as Mr Jeffrey said he had no responses from any of the parties yet - and the deadline for candidates is this week.

Blair McDougall, a key figure on the pro-union side during the 2014 independence referendum, will aim to win the seat from the SNP's Kirsten Oswald, who ousted former Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy in 2015.

"Not to even be prepared discuss the possibility of such an agreement is short sighted in the least".

Similarly, Labour would be attacked by the SNP if local politicians struck up partnerships with the Conservatives.

But while admitting the Conservatives had done well in Scotland, Sturgeon insisted that May's party had eaten into Labour's rather than her own SNP party's support.

Ms Davidson said: "We won the local government election in Gordon, beating the SNP into second place".

Ms Davidson said the council election results had been "very encouraging" but that her party was taking "nothing for granted" ahead of the poll on 8 June.

Sturgeon said: "The SNP won this election, but make no mistake the Tories are planning to take Scotland's voters for granted in June's general election".

"The fact is you can not trust the Tories - they're cutting Scotland's budget as it stands and gearing up to inflict more austerity and further hardship in the years ahead", Ms Sturgeon added.

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson paid a visit to Inverurie as the Tories turned their attention to Alex Salmond's Gordon constituency.

"Labour values must run through any deals: the defence of local services against cuts; and the proper funding of the services so many people rely on such as education and care for the elderly".

Nicola Sturgeon has said a Scottish Parliament vote in support of a second ballot has given her a mandate for another referendum.

She added: "The truth is the more Tory MPs Westminster has, the heavier the price Scotland will pay".

"The Tories are the party of the "rape clause" and hard Brexit". To show they can't take Scotland for granted. "They're really angry at Nicola Sturgeon for trying to assimilate their vote for Remain as a proxy vote for independence when it was nothing of the sort".

The First Minister and SNP admitted the Conservatives in Scotland had "a good day by their standards", with the party returning a record number of councillors north of the border.

However, council elections include about 11 per cent of independents which limits their scope to indicate the likely general election result.
