Palestinians injured during rallies for prisoners

On Friday afternoon, dozens of young men marched towards the borderline area, burned dozens of tires near Nahal Ozz and Karni checkpoints close to the borders between eastern Gaza city and Israel.

The situation on the ground in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Friday reached a critical and risky juncture as the health of the hunger-striking Palestinian political prisoners continued to deteriorate on the 33rd day of their strike. On the Gaza border Palestinians claimed live fire was used in some instances as rioters approached the border fence. The Israeli settler who shot and wounded a Palestinian man who threw rocks at his auto was detained, but was released after proving it was in self-defense. Two soldiers were injured, it said.

Some 843 prisoners are still observing the strike that has wide Palestinian support.

The Permanent Representatives Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) assembled in Jeddah to discuss the situation surrounding Israel-held Palestinian prisoners, who have been on a hunger strike for over a month.

Initially called for by Fateh-affiliated prisoners, most notably imprisoned senior Fatah official Marwan Barghouthi, the strike has been joined by other prisoners from various Palestinian political factions.

Palestinians say that the open-ended strike is in protest against poor conditions in prisons and Israeli policy of detention without trial that has been applied against thousands since the 1980s.

The protesters pelted his auto with stones, and the Israeli man opened fire, killing one Palestinian and wounding an Associated Press photographer who was covering the unrest.
