North Korea Says Detained American Had Intended To 'Subvert The Country'

The verbal blast comes as United States and Chinese diplomats at the United Nations are believed to be discussing how to impose stricter sanctions on North Korea should it conduct a new nuclear test.

Kim Sang Dok committed "criminal acts of hostility aimed to overturn" North Korea-"not only in the past but also during his last stay before interception"- the Korean Central News Agency said Wednesday, adding that the "interception" had taken place April 22 at Pyongyang's global airport, explained the report.

The Global Times, an outspoken nationalist tabloid published by China's ruling Communist Party's flagship People's Daily, warned in a Thursday editorial that the North's actions threatened a 1961 treaty of non-aggression between the two countries.

China is calling for restraint in the standoff over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, one day after North Korea complained the United States is pushing the region closer to nuclear war.

North Korea has stepped up its weapons tests, firing dozens of missiles and detonating two nuclear bombs since the start of past year.

He is the third U.S. citizen being held in the country.
