Netflix 5.0 will not chill with rooted Android phones and tablets

Netflix 5.0 will not chill with rooted Android phones and tablets

In an official statement to Android Police, the company stated, "Devices that are not Google-certified or have been altered will no longer work with our latest app".

But, Android Police, who first reported this development, mentions that the video streaming platform works just fine for Android users who've already downloaded the app or have sideloaded it on their device.

Following the global cyber attack, Netflix has stated that its app won't be available on rooted or unlocked Android smartphones any longer.

PixabayWhy is Netflix blocking its app on rooted Android phone? Presumably, that means Netflix fears that Widevine could be circumvented on a rooted device.

There are many trade-offs to rooting your Android phone or tablet.

KitGuru Says: There are so many ways to circumvent this sort of blocking that it's not even amusing.

Some rooted users are now still able to use the app, though. Now, majority will have to choose to keep their root access and watch things as they unfold.

If you'd rather not, but still want to get future Netflix updates, you'll need to rely on APK hosting websites such as APKMirror, which catalogue and offer every new version. The company confirmed that the latest update will not work on devices that aren't Google-certified or have been altered.

That's not to say the app has stopped working entirely on rooted users' devices. Android Police notes that whether you can download the Netflix app seems linked to a device's SafetyNet status, not whether it supports Google's Wildvine DRM. The block of the Netflix app on these devices is due to the Widevine digital right system of Google. Here's it, if your device has an unblocked bootloader, you may experience difficulty or access denial to Netflix even if your firmware is untampered. But when you do so, you'll lose all improvements made by Netflix.
