1 killed, dozens injured in caste violence in northern India

Two senior police officers of Saharanpur were removed on Wednesday over inability to assess the situation and prevent the fresh bout of caste violence in the district. She also alleged that the administration was hand in glove with BJP and RSS leaders. Security forces have launched a massive search and arrest operation in the district to apprehend miscreants, who are suspected to fuel the violence.

The police officials filed Gupta's complaint and assured him of an investigation, but discontented from the way he was dealt with, the saffron leader created an uproar inside the police station and misbehaved with the head police officer of the station.

She also said that it was only during her visit to Saharanpur on Tuesday that she learned of this outfit using the name of Babasaheb Ambedkar and the BSP to exploit the poor Dalits.

Mishra said Wednesday that the Dalits were attacked while they were returning from a rally led by their leader in Saharanpur, a town in Uttar Pradesh state.

Balyan further stated that strict action will be taken against people who were involved in the clash. Shabbirpur village has witnessed caste conflict thrice since April.

After days of tension following caste clashes, the residents of Shabbirpur village in Saharanpur district had a reason to celebrate as a Dalit family solemnised the marriage of two women on Friday.

Caste-based discrimination and violence against Dalits is widespread in Uttar Pradesh, but is believed to be officially under-reported due to fear of reprisal. This protest took place in the wake of the violent clashes between members of the Dalit and Thakur community in early May. The village is home to around 600 Dalits and over 900 Thakurs.

The Centre has sent 400 anti-riot police personnel to Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday to help the state restore peace in the region where caste clashes have claimed two lives.

Meanwhile the Uttar Pradesh government has made it clear that no politician will be allowed to visit the strife-torn countryside, specially after violence broke out soon after the visit of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati. The injured will be given Rs 50,000 each as compensation.

What sparked the recent caste clashes in Saharanpur?

In their bid to revive lost trust between Dalits and Rajputs, a few Thakurs, including ex Pradhan of Shabbirpur Om Singh, joined in the celebrations.

After Mayawati wrapped up her visit to the village, a sword-wielding mob attacked a Bolero of some BSP supporters, who had come from Sarsawa to attend her event.
