Shooting near South Florida mall leaves 1 dead

A gunman opened fire inside a gym at an upscale shopping mall outside Miami on Saturday afternoon, wounding two people before he was killed, Miami-Dade County police told local media.

The scene at The Shops at Merrick Park, located at 358 San Lorenzo Avenue in Coral Gables, Florida.

Benedicte, the woman at the gym, described the shooter as a tall, muscular African-American man.

Equinox member Shed Boren told The Herald the incident involved a disgruntled trainer: "I had just left Equinox, " he said. "This is not an active shooter", Denham said by telephone. "I could hear at least two shots first". Former Miami baseball standout Javy Rodriguez said he was inside the gym and working out when the shots started, writing on Facebook that he ran to safety. "This wasn't someone who made a decision to kill a bunch of people", he said.

He said: "People were hiding under tables".

A Coral Gables Police Spokesperson said the scene was secured by 1:45 p.m and officers are now investigating the incident.

Tim Hartog, general manager of Yard House restaurant, said the business was on lockdown for a time.

Police said the area was secure about 40 minutes later, the station reported.

Before police came by and ordered the restaurant to be locked down, he said many people rushed out the back door, leaving cellphones and other personal possessions behind in the chaos.

Miami-Dade police said the second victim was in critical condition at a hospital. On April 8, 2017, there was a shooting at the Equinox gym at the shopping center.
