Ronaldo landmark as Madrid wins 2-1, ends Bayern record run

Despite scoring twice in Real Madrid's 2-1 win to become the first player to reach 100 goals in European club competition, Ronaldo lamented the chances squandered by his team in the first leg of the quarterfinals.

His goals helped give Real the upper hand ahead of next Tuesday's second leg.

"I am happy with the win, we reacted well to make a comeback", Ronaldo said on the Madrid website. Zidane expressed his concern for the Welshman and said: "Gareth felt something at half-time and I didn't want to risk him".

The Portugal global was presented with a commemorative shirt by Real president Florentino Perez on Thursday to mark the accomplishment, and told the club's official website: "It's a great honour to reach 100 goals in Europe".

"But after they missed the penalty, I was convinced the team would be encouraged and the second half was going to be ours".

Javi Martinez's sending-off just after the hour mark handed Real the initiative, and the 32-year-old Ronaldo clinched Real's victory when he beat Manuel Neuer after being picked out by Marco Asensio in the 77th minute.

Ronaldo reached his milestone by slotting home the victor 13 minutes from time.

Real pressed home the numerical advantage but Zidane warned the slender lead may not be enough. The Poland global was clearly missed by the Bundesliga champions during their 2-1 defeat to Los Blancos on Wednesday night but club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge promises "100%" he will be back for the return fixture.

Bayern were missing Poland forward Robert Lewandowsi because of a shoulder injury, and lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

"We played very well, we scored early and the game became easier". We showed patience and we showed the willingness to get the right result.

Arjen Robben only shot twice on goal and they were all contested which made the shots, not threats.

His first goal in the competition proper did not arrive until nearly two years later, when he scored in United's 7-1 thrashing of Roma in the quarter-finals in 2007. "Real have the better chance now but we still have a chance too, and we'll play with everything we've got".

It could have been a higher score and Real captain Sergio Ramos had the ball in the net late on, but the goal was disallowed. We suffered a lot in the first half.
