Rangers Even Up First-Round Playoff Series with Canadiens

Despite a strong 26-save performance from Henrik Lundqvist, New York dropped its second straight in the series, and its sixth straight playoff home game. At their best, the Rangers play a quick puck movement, up-tempo, pressuring style of hockey. NY has played too much to how Montreal wants to play this series.

"It wasn't our best", Pacioretty said after the Montreal Canadiens' 2-1 loss to the New York Rangers in Game 4 Tuesday night. In that the Canadiens forced the Rangers into playing a style of hockey that they are not built for.

"I think everyone wants to elevate their game this time of year", said Mitchell.

"We needed this win for the series but also moving forward".

Artturi Lehkonen and Shea Weber scored power-play goals for Montreal and Carey Price stopped 20 shots. It was such a good feeling to see everyone stop what they were doing and be completely still and listen to what the coach had to say. While New York's defence pairs remained the same as Games 1 and 2, the forward units were reconfigured. "They're going to come out hard again so we have to play the same way but with more effort and play good as a team". If not, I will be back late Tuesday night or Wednesday AM with at a minimum a Game 4 recap blog and possibly some thoughts on Game 3.

Through much of the first two games and essentially all of Game 3, Montreal forced NY into neutral zone dumps, most of which were cleared easily. New York Rangers' Mats Zuccarello, right, celebrates his goal against the Montreal Canadiens with teammates Derek Stepan, left, Chris Kreider, center right, and Brady Skjei during the second period of Game 2 i.

"After what happened in Montreal, you know for sure that the game is not over until it's over", Lundqvist said. "The streak was - we haven't been able to find ways to win at home".

Lundqvist has been stellar in the series with a 1.89 goals-against average and a.944 save percentage.

Price's toughest save came on a sprawling stop in the third period on NY rookie Jimmy Vesey to keep the deficit at one.

About a minute later, Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov misplayed the puck along the boards and Fast grabbed the loose puck and slid it through the legs of Price for an unassisted goal at 11:39 to open the scoring. They attacked consistently and while they sat back somewhat while protecting a one-goal lead in the third period, they did enough to force a slew of Canadiens icings while clogging the neutral zone. He remains the best player on either side in this series, now with 134 saves on 142 shots.

The lack of action through the first two periods gave the place the feel of a $1 billion library. We had some zone entries and offensive-zone time in the third.

Nash gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead early in the second.

If not, I look to a veteran like Ryan McDonagh to get the team going. "I was trying to go to the net all night and trying to cause some chaos", Nash said.

The Rangers came out of the Christmas break with a home game against the Ottawa Senators. Defenceman Nick Holden returned after a one-game absence and replaced Kevin Klein.

It paid off immediately when Pavelski won an offensive zone faceoff back to Justin Braun and then deflected a point shot past Talbot for the fastest goal in Sharks playoff history. Mitchell passed to Weber, who returned the favour and provided Mitchell with an open net.

Sergei Bobrovsky had 27 saves to help the Blue Jackets get their first playoff win in three years and their first-ever in regulation.

Patric Hornqvist, Ron Hainsey and Tom Kuhnhackl also scored for Pittsburgh, and Marc-Andre Fleury - pressed into service because of an injury to Matt Murray at the start of the series - had 29 saves.

He finished the season with only one goal and nine points over his final 18 games. Any time they seemed to get into a groove, they would take a penalty and kill the sudden burst of pace. He grabbed a chip pass from Karlsson, circled in from the right and beat Fleury between the pads.

Stepan scored twice that night on and the Rangers would go on to win 4-3.

Just like in Game 3 when they rallied from a 3-1 deficit, the Penguins began roaring back.

San Jose then took the game over in the second starting when Marleau scored on an early power play.
