How Trump's FCC Head Plans To Attack Net Neutrality

Internet companies are readying for a showdown with a Republican-controlled government over a policy near and dear to their hearts: net neutrality.

The head of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission is expected to unveil his strategy this week to overturn landmark 2015 net neutrality rules, a move that will kickoff a new battle over the future of the internet. Then after taking comments and a typical delay of four to six months, Pai would propose a final rule.

Pai's speech to conservative group FreedomWorks will be at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

Pai "is determined to give control of the internet to companies like Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon, no matter the cost to our economy and democracy", Free Press CEO and President Craig Aaron said in a statement.

Before adopting the current rules, the FCC twice tried to impose net neutrality rules that were struck down by courts as going beyond the agency's authority. Public Knowledge urges President Trump to honor his campaign promises to put Americans before monopolies by preserving net neutrality rules as he nears the end of his first 100 days. It propagates and promotes that FCC should police the broadband provider actions using the utility-style regulation.

At the time, Pai also hinted that the FCC would look into raising the media ownership limit.

"It makes no sense for the government to be discouraging investment in the newspaper industry", Pai said past year.

Pai told reporters Thursday he has been meeting with major internet companies and trade groups to discuss ways of protecting an open internet. Every indication is that Chairman Pai is on the verge of announcing the details of his plan to gut net neutrality, an assault which would be the capstone of an agenda riddled with industry giveaways at the expense of consumers, competition, and small business. John Oliver also dedicated a show segment to the topic, which raised awareness of an otherwise jargon-y, abstract issue. She fears a world where the big service providers can block or slow access to web sites that they oppose, or demand extra payments from companies that might pose a competitive threat.

For the moment, though, there's no net-neutrality development to rally around, and won't be until there's an actual FCC proposal up for debate.
