President Rouhani also condemned the US -allied Gulf Arab states for supporting the American attack.

"We have reports from multiple sources that false flags like this one - and I can not call it otherwise - are being prepared in other parts of Syria, including the southern suburbs of Damascus".

"Stockpiles and continued use demonstrate that Russian Federation has failed in its ability to deliver on its 2013 commitment [to help get rid of Assad's chemical weapons]".

Freeland, in Italy for meetings of the G7 foreign ministers, says Assad's gruesome chemical attack against his own people and the US missile strike that followed have created conditions conducive to a political solution to the tensions in Syria.

However, Prime Minister Theresa May's official spokesman refused to be drawn on whether the United Kingdom would support further U.S. military action, saying it was a "hypothetical question". It might also have cast a spotlight on the policy divergence between Britain and the U.S., not only on Syria but towards Russian Federation, against which London wants to see tougher economic and political sanctions.

Tillerson says the US sees no future role for Assad in Syria, but he says the USA isn't pre-supposing how Assad's departure will occur.

Mr Tillerson, who also met Mr Putin during the visit, acknowledged the two world powers had "sharp differences". He said the United Nations should first investigate the attack. "That will part of the discussions when I visit Moscow next week is to call upon Foreign Minister Lavrov and the Russian government to fulfill the obligation it made to the global community when it agreed to be the guarantor of the elimination of the chemical weapons", he told ABC. It's unclear whether Putin will grant Tillerson a meeting.
