Florida Senate says there should be time to play in schools

According to the Associated Press, a Senate panel on Monday, April 3, approved a compromise measure that would make drastic changes to high-school exams and testing formats.

State senators crafted the proposal together amid arguments over how much testing should be allowed in the state's public schools. Other special interests like private casinos and animal rights groups fall into House and Senate camps, pressuring the respective chamber leaders to dig their heels in.

Galvano has introduced sweeping legislation, SB 8, that would essentially turn Florida from a state that theoretically bans gambling into one that embraces it.

Rep. La Rosa told House lawmakers that his legislation is building "a firewall" that will close all the loopholes that could be exploited for any form of gambling expansion.

The Senate bill would allow slot machines at dog and horse tracks in eight counties outside of South Florida.

"I stand firm in the Senate position and will not negotiate against myself", Galvano said.

Mr Smith said the unprecedented destruction meant the sky would be the limit when it came to estimating the damage bill. The cyclone is also likely to have damaged the Great Barrier Reef, marine experts warned .

Supporters say this is a crucial change that will eliminate inconsistent regulations across county lines.

In addition to this, it would allow the Seminole Tribe to offer craps and roulette at its casinos.

Legislators have a month left to reach an agreement amid heavy lobbying effort from those in the gambling industry.

"Areas that don't expand gaming have the most potential for negotiations from our side", La Rosa pointed out.

If the bill passes, it will go back to the Senate, but could soon be on the governor's desk. On the other hand, House Representatives argued during their Tuesday meeting that the bill could have treated pari-mutuels more fairly.

The state has appealed this ruling but has also requested the courts hold off on pursuing the matter until after the legislative session is over.
