"A Day without a Woman" is a strike for "equity, justice and the human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people, through a demonstration of economic solidarity". "We are really here safeguarding the rights of women and girls and their families and we need to be here to do that", said Frankel. "For others who I don't agree with, I'm going to let them know why I'm striking".

The one-day general worldwide strike is sponsored in the United States by the Women's March on Washington, whose partners include the nation's top teachers' unions, the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers.

Big issues require big action, but sometimes those actions must take place on a personal level before widespread effects can take place. Roughly three-quarters of USA teachers are women, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

On Wednesday, International Women's Day, the organizers behind the January march are planning a showing of economic solidarity in walkouts, rallies and marches dubbed A Day Without a Woman.

"But many parents are not in that position", as one person said on Alexandria City Public Schools' Facebook page. "We've never had circumstances like this before".

Schools in Alexandria, Va.; Chapel Hill-Carrboro, N.C.; and Prince George's County, Md., closed for the day on Wednesday because of widespread absences from staff participating in the strike.

On Wednesday, driven by a high volume of requests for time off, several schools were also forced to shutter their doors out of necessity.
