Woman questioned after 9yo boy mauled, 5yo boy missing in Murray River

The alleged attack unfolded near the Victoria and New South Wales border, on the Victorian side, after the mother took her two sons from their grandmother's care in Deniliquin and drove them to a friend's home, which backs onto the river.

Although yet to be formally identified, police believe the body to be that of the five-year-old whose mother they allege tried to drown both her sons in the river on the NSW-Victoria border on Thursday.

But officers are still scouring the river searching for the unnamed woman's five-year-old who was allegedly seen drifting face down in the water.

At 10pm, their mother, who can not be identified for legal reasons, presented herself to a police station in Echuca on the Victorian side of the river.

She faced an extradition order by video-link in a Bendigo court on Friday afternoon, when it was agreed she would be sent to Deniliquin to face a charge of attempted murder of her older son.

During the court hearing, she was refused bail.

The Deniliquin woman, aged in her 20s, was extradited from Victoria to New South Wales on Friday night and charged with the attempted murder of one of her sons.

"It's anticipated there will be a further charge", he told the court.

It is understood the nine-year-old boy sustained several dog bites and is in a serious condition in the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

The father of the boys has spoken of his devastation and said he was numb after learning about what had happened.

The court heard the mother then held her younger son's face under the water.
