WBC Notes: Tournament Ends for Francisco Cervelli, As Team Italy Loses Tiebreaker

WBC Notes: Tournament Ends for Francisco Cervelli, As Team Italy Loses Tiebreaker

On Monday, Miguel Cabrera hit a home run in the ninth inning, helping propel Venezuela to a 4-3 victory over Italy in the 1st Round of the World Baseball Classic.

One night after getting a late reprieve from WBC officials, Venezuela moved on to face the United States in the Pool F opener for both teams Wednesday in San Diego.

Combine that with the fact that Venezuela's first game against Puerto Rico ended in the 7th inning due to the mercy rule used by the tournament (games are stopped after 7 innings if one team is 10 or more runs ahead; Venezuela lost 11-0), and you get a ideal mess of a situation. Now it's the other two teams facing off, as Venezuela - fresh off barely surviving a tiebreaker game against Italy - gets USA.

Not too many people showed up at Charros de Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara for Monday night's game between Italy and Venezuela at the World Baseball Classic. But then officials informed Venezuela of the correct calculation in the locker room.

Axe-wielding man injures least five at Dusseldorf train station
Anti-terror police have sealed off Dusseldorf station in Germany after reports of an attack involving a man armed with an axe. One photo from the scene shows paramedics treating someone lying on the ground, taped off by a cordon.

The decision hinged on a key ruling regarding average runs conceded per inning in head-to-head group play.

Gregorius doubled in a run in the third when the Netherlands scored four to take a 6-0 lead. The game was ended after eight innings because of the 10-run rule. Italy finished 1-3 in the tournament.

Israel beat the Netherlands 4-2 in the first round in Seoul but saw a different team on Monday at Tokyo Dome. Meaning if Mexico would have recorded one out in the 9th inning of its walk-off loss to Italy, it would have advanced over the Venezuelan team.
