Steelers meet with LB Don't'a Hightower but no deal reached

Before fans got too excited about the report, it should be understood there is a very good chance Dont'a Hightower never gets out of NY without a deal. As it turned out, the 27-year-old landed a deal worth $10.875 million in average annual value, which is the second most in the National Football League among middle linebackers (Luke Kuechly).

A faction on One Jets Drive always felt that Hightower was destined to return to New England.

New England Patriots linebacker Dont'a Hightower agreed to a four-year, $43.5 million deal, his agent announced Wednesday. A basic Jets move, Hightower must of confused the place for a circus.

Regardless, expect the Steelers to continue to seek cornerback help while possibly adding a receiver such as speedster Justin Hunter, who visited Pittsburgh on Monday, or a defensive lineman.

Clearly Hightower wants to return to New England, he's just trying to get more money out of the franchise. And by trading for Allen, they let Martellus Bennett walk in free agency. But it sounds like mostly Hightower is trying to get the Patriots to bring their number up.

That fact that Hightower is even visiting clubs seems to indicates that the Patriots have not made a firm offer to him. Hightower is expected to land $10-11 million per year.

Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn squandered a brilliant chance to open the scoring but was denied by a fine save from Hoops goalkeeper Craig Gordon before Stuart Armstrong put the league leaders in front after 35 minutes with a fine left-footed strike.

Hightower was the Patriots' most important free agent this offseason.

Although the Patriots know what he can do on the field, they can only hope health issues don't limit him in the coming years.

Perhaps it's for the best that Hightower won't be signing with them. The Steelers aren't out of it with Hightower. The Jets apparently pulled out all the stops to secure his services, baking him some cupcakes, sending Jets gear to his mother, and reportedly offering a deal that averaged over $12 million per year, but it ultimately wasn't enough.

Hightower recorded 65 tackles and 2.5 sacks last season.

His fourth-quarter strip sack of Matt Ryan in the Super Bowl was one of the key plays in New England's historic 25-point comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
