Shiv Sena's Vishwanath Mahadeshwar to be Mumbai Mayor as BJP extends support

"A Ramnarain Ruia College graduate, he was previously principal of Raje Sambhaji Vidyalaya and Junior College in Santacruz".

Vishwanath Mahadeshwar was today elected as the new mayor of Mumbai, with support coming from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Congress, which had bagged 31 seats, had nominated Vitthal Lokare for the position. He is one of the most educated Sena corporators.

After winning the election, Mahadeshwar said he will conduct a coordination committee meeting between the state government and the BMC soon after taking over, reported The Indian Express.

The mayor's tenure is for two and a half years.

Dilip Lande, leader of the MNS in the BMC, said party corporators had abstained from voting to protest what they claimed was a cheating of the people of the city by the Shiv Sena.

USA suspends expedited processing of H-1B visas
US companies often use the visas to bring lower-cost skilled workers to the United States. The suspension also applies to petitions that may be cap-exempt.

The decks for his election were cleared recently after the BJP, locked in a battle with the Sena to reach the magic figure of 114 votes to rule the 227-member BMC, made a decision to hand a virtual walkover to the warring ally.

BJP, Shiv Sena indulged in heated sloganeering against each other during the mayoral elections.

Earlier Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced that the BJP will not contest the March 8 Mayoral polls. Since the Sena doesn't have a clear majority, it will have to cobble up numbers every time when the civic house would be passing any proposals or resolutions. Also, a three-member coordination committee will be set up which will submit its report in three months on how to bring transparency in the BMC, he said.

At that time, Shiv Sena had welcomed BJP's stand and had said that it was thankful to the CM for respecting the sentiments of people.

Mahadeshwar's election as the 76th mayor of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, India's richest civic body, comes as the culmination of a fierce battle between the Sena and BJP for the political reins of the country's financial capital.
