Putin: 'Inappropriate' to sanction Syria

Russian Federation used its veto to block a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Syria for the seventh time, rejecting an effort by Western powers to impose sanctions on Bashar al-Assad's government and military for its use of chemical weapons.

A single veto from one of the 15-nation council's five permanent members - Russia, China, United States, Britain and France - can kill a resolution.

The Russian president referred to efforts to sanction Syria for its reported use of chemical weapons as "inappropriate." . It found that the government had used chemical weapons at least three times.

France's United Nations ambassador, Francois Delattre, said Monday that his government was "very pleased that the new American administration has confirmed it shares completely our view" on the need for sanctions. China generally votes in line with the Russian position on Syria, and the veto it cast Tuesday was its sixth on a resolution seeking to address the conflict.

Support for the resolution will send a "strong, clear message. that the worldwide community means business on preventing the use of these abhorrent weapons", Rycroft said.

In 2012, President Barack Obama said that he did not intend to intervene in the Syrian war but also that Assad's deployment of Syria's known chemical arsenal could change his calculation.
