Mesa County Health Department sees highest flu activity in 5 years

The OSDH reports that 1,664 people have been hospitalized during the flu season that began September 1, 2016, 116 of those in the last week.

The information on the sixteen deaths were in accordance with information submitted by providers to the North Carolina Division of Public Health.

In the latest statewide victim totals, there were 11 deaths reported in the 65 and older age group, six in the 50-to-64 age group and two in the 25-to-49 age group. Last year, 59 people died from the flu. Oklahoma County has had five deaths, a number which didn't rise this week after quintupling the previous week. All 16 deaths were reported to be adults, the first time in three weeks that there was no pediatric death from the flu.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these individuals during this hard time", said Robert Resendes, Public Health Director.

Results showed that people who received the high-dose vaccine were 36 percent less likely to die in the 30 days following hospitalization or emergency room visit for the flu in 2012 to 2013 than those who received the standard-dose vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in February that the flu vaccine protects about half the people who receive it - better than in some years but not as good as in others. Mothers of newborns should also be vaccinated to protect their newborns who can not receive the vaccine until they're 6 months old. Good handwashing practices and respiratory etiquette such as covering your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing can also help prevent the spread of the virus. Oklahoma remains in a "widespread" flu activity category.

If you think you've escaped the flu this year, think again.
