Toddler Among Two Killed In West Side Shooting

A Chicago toddler was shot and killed on Tuesday in what police suspect to be a "gang hit" on a man in a vehicle with him.

The 2-year-old boy was killed along with a 26-year-old man, who was the target of the shooting.

Lavontay White, the toddler in the incident, was riding in the backseat with his pregnant aunt in the passenger seat while her boyfriend, who is a documented gang member with a lengthy criminal history, drove through an alley in the North Lawndale neighborhood. The 62-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds about 2:40 p.m. and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to reports, she and the 4-months-along baby remain hospitalized in fair condition and are both expected to survive. The 12-year old, Kanari Gentry-Bowers, was also shot Saturday and is now in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.

Police have spent time looking for surveillance video and believe they have promising leads on who fired the deadly shots, according to Supt. The woman runs from the vehicle screaming and yells that she has been shot in the stomach. Two people forced their way inside, and then shot through the door of a 19-year-old man's room before taking off, police said. Over the weekend, over 20 people were shot, with five fatalities. Two officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and two males who were in the Nissan refused medical attention.

An encounter is underway between security forces and terrorists in Yaripora of Kulgam district in Jammu and Kashmir. Heavy contingents of police and security forces have been deployed in the region to prevent massive public protests.

No one is in custody for the shooting, which occurred in broad daylight and was streamed on Facebook Live by one of the victims, police said. "There's no doubt in my mind that we'll find him". Police say no arrests have been made.

Police have confirmed the authenticity of the video and it is part of their investigation, spokesman Frank Giancamilli said. Last year, the city had 4000 shooting victims and 762 homicides, a two-decade high.
