Voting has opened in India's most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, in a contest seen as a key mid-term test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his economic reform policy.

The Congress vice president also clarified that there was no fight between the Samajwadi Party and the Congress over Assembly seats.

Talking about Modi's warning in Uttarakhand on Saturday that he had everyone's horoscopes, Gandhi said that it might be the Prime Minister's favourite pastime and that he should continue to google.

Political leaders slammed each other during their election addresses on Friday as part of the last round of campaigning before the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh on February 11.

"It is the Godzilla of states", said BJP national spokesman Nalin Kohli, as he looked out over the darkened streets of Lucknow one evening this week.

"The farmers of the country are faced with financial problems", he said.

Both Modi and Shah slammed Congress and Samajwadi Party, saying Rahul ran a campaign against the SP Government and wondered as to what happened overnight that they were embracing each other.

The Election Commission said, "3888 digital and video cameras were used, webcasting was done in 2857 places for first phase elections".

"If you do no answer in Uttar Pradesh, who will you make it Uttam Pradesh", Modi said. Modi has rightly said that the Congress always tried to promote the contribution of one family - a reference to the Gandhis - and neglected contributions of Veer Savarkar, even Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
