Florida congressman introduces bill to eliminate Environmental Protection Agency

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) will oppose President Trump's nominee for administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, he said today.

Unfortunately for everyone, the EPA's employees have been instructed no to speak to the media, which makes it even more complicated to understand what is going on behind closed doors within the Trump administration.

His supporters - a list that includes industry groups and most Republicans - expect Pruitt to use a potential position at the EPA to pull back Obama-era regulations they consider too broad and potentially against the law.

Last Thursday, the Senate environment committee approved Pruitt despite a boycott of his nomination by the panel's Democratic members. The full senate is expected to vote on Pruitt later this week-meaning that now is a good time to call your senators and urge them to reject #PollutingPruitt. Republicans, though, have said Pruitt is well-suited to handle the job. A coalition of almost two-dozen conservative advocacy groups has backed his nomination, insisting that Pruitt has "demonstrated his commitment to upholding the Constitution and ensuring the EPA works for American families and consumers".

The letter opposing Pruitt was circulated among former EPA employees by the Environmental Integrity Project, a 15-year-old nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded by former EPA officials to advocate for the enforcement of environmental laws and protect public health. "[He] has gone to disturbing lengths to advance the views and interests of business".

Pruitt now serves as the Attorney General of Oklahoma.

In Chicago, around 30 employees of the EPA's regional office there joined a protest organized by the Sierra Club environmental group and the American Federation of Government Employees to protest Pruitt's nomination.

"People are anxious about losing their jobs because the administration is interested in dismantling, or downsizing in the extreme, the EPA", organizer Nicole Cantello, chief steward of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 704, said.
