Finally! PS4 Gets External Hard Drive Support

With many major games these days coming in at 30 - 80 GBs, you can easily fill that storage space with a dozen games or so. Simply plug in a USB 3.0 drive and you can now put anything you want on it through the settings menu. Sony also confirmed that the update will allow up to 8TB HDDs on the system, which should keep players going for years. Hard drives of up to 8 terabytes are supported, and you can manage their data via the PS4's "Applications Saved Data Management" menu.

Other features have been announced for the 4.50 update as well, including a simplified notifications list, an update to the quick menu and the ability to treat your PlayStation Network Activity Feed like it was Facebook. As beta testers are checking their e-mails for instructions on how to download and install the beta update, Sony revealed a few key features of the upcoming software update.

The PS4 version 4.50 software update looks to be adding a new feature to Sony's latest hardware. But then you're also stuck with an otherwise perfectly good 500GB hard drive that's now become a shelf ornament. Microsoft's Xbox One console already supports external storage, but until now PS4 users have had to replace the internal hard drive to expand their consoles' storage capabilities.

Sony introduced the quick menu feature with firmware 4.0 and this update will bring some additional improvements to make it more accessible.
