Chapel Hill Water Safe To Use Now

OWASA field personnel are working to fix the water main break as soon as possible.

That wasn't the case earlier in the weekend when those same businesses were closed when a water emergency impacted the Orange County Water and Sewer Authority.

The uncertainty of the water shortage, which began Friday, prompted the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to postpone the men's basketball game against Notre Dame, scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m., until 1 p.m. Sunday. "However, we encourage our residents to continue to practice water conservation strategies until OWASA's storage has been replenished to normal levels".

The Orange Water and Sewer Authority had been getting water from the City of Durham after a flouride problem forced it to shut down the Jones Ferry Road Water Treatment Plant.

Water was safe to drink and customers were no longer asked to conserve water for essential use.

All Orange Water and Sewer Authority operations were back to normal Sunday, OWASA said in an update.

Health department employees were visiting every restaurant and hotel directing them to close, Bridger said.

OWASA officials said Thursday too much fluoride was released into the water treatment process.

"We apologize to customers for the significant disruption and inconvenience due to the need to cease use of OWASA water from Friday morning to mid-afternoon Saturday", OWASA said in its Sunday statement.

Restaurants served by OWASA have been ordered closed. If a toilet does not have a tank, it may be possible to pour water into the bowl to flush. Both Carrboro and Chapel Hill declared states of emergency.

OWASA is working to restore the Jones Ferry Road Water Treatment Plant to normal operation as soon as it is safe to do so and field personnel are working to fix the water main break as soon as possible.

The city of Durham, Chatham County, and the town of Hillsborough are helping meet the demand for water via tanker.
