Congressional Republicans welcome Mexico import tax to fund border wall

Slim's comments came a day after Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto cancelled a scheduled meeting with Trump amid growing tensions between the two countries over Trump's proposed border wall.

Mexico is willing to talk with the US in order to maintain good relations, but paying for US President Donald Trump's border wall "is not negotiable", Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray said on Thursday. "Mexico reiterates its willingness to work with the United States to reach agreements that favor both nations".

But Trump has been reluctant to describe how the United States would pay to build the wall, outside of saying he would make Mexico foot the bill.

President Trump said at the Republican congressional retreat in Philadelphia that he and Peña Nieto had agreed to cancel the meeting.

In a video address to the Mexican people on Wednesday night, Mr Peña Nieto said he regretted and condemned the decision.

Mr Pena Nieto said he informed the White House on Thursday morning that he had cancelled his trip to Washington. But he says it "clearly provides funding" for the wall.

"The US has a 60 billion dollar trade deficit with Mexico".

Mr. Trump said he wanted to build an "impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful, southern border wall" between the US and Mexico.

Some of the border is already fenced, but the President said a wall is needed to stop illegal immigrants entering from Latin America.

"I have said it time and again: Mexico will not pay for any wall", he said, referring to Trump's vow to make the southern neighbor pay for the barrier.

The planned wall was one of Mr Trump's key election campaign pledges.

Meanwhile, Austin Congressman Michael McCaul offered up some creative ways to pay for the wall Wednesday, including imposing fees on visa applications from countries south of the border.
