Snow, freezing rain, rain make for messy morning commute

Accuweather, a private forecaster, said three to six inches (7.5 to 15 cm) of snow was expected to snarl travel in northern NY and New England.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Orange and Putnam counties through noon Monday. Westerly winds across Lake Erie will cause lake effect snow showers to develop late Wednesday and intensify Wednesday night and Thursday. Passage of another cold front Thursday afternoon will bring a brief period of heavy snow plus even colder temperatures.

Here we may see up to four-to-nine inches of snow depending on terrain, and where the cold air draws the line in the sand - or snow.

"By the morning commute, we should have 1-3" of snow on the ground across much of the state with perhaps up to 4" or 5" in the higher terrain along the MA line.

Wednesday: Partly cloudy skies are expected along with cold temperatures.

The cold air will move in Tuesday night and, with temperatures expected to be hovering around freezing Wednesday morning, precipitation could be snow. A few morning snow showers are possible. Currently, the counties east of Lake Ontario are likely to bear the brunt of the heaviest snows. This happened by around 6 a.m.in most places. Sometimes this process can take a little longer than the computer models predict, if this were to happen it would snow for a little longer before changing to rain.

Thursday winds will be expected to shift around to a more northwesterly direction which will have the bands shift more to the south.

The chance for winter weather continues for Friday night into Saturday morning. It will be blustery with wind chills dropping below zero!
